The UK’s Best-Selling Electric Cars

Introduction

The UK’s electric vehicle market is continuing to grow, with more drivers than ever making the switch to fully electric cars. From practical family SUVs to stylish saloons and compact everyday vehicles, there is now an EV available for almost every type of driver. In 2025, almost half a million new battery electric vehicles were registered in the UK, with EVs accounting for around one in four new cars sold. So, which electric cars are proving the most popular with UK drivers?

Based on 2025 UK registration figures, these were the five best-selling battery electric cars:

1. Tesla Model Y

The Tesla Model Y was the UK’s best-selling electric car in 2025, with 24,298 registrations.

Its combination of impressive range, practicality and technology has made it a popular choice for drivers looking for an electric family car. With a spacious interior and access to Tesla’s charging network, the Model Y continues to be one of the most recognisable EVs on UK roads.

2. Tesla Model 3

Close behind was the Tesla Model 3, with 21,188 registrations in 2025.

The Model 3 remains popular thanks to its long range, minimalist interior and strong performance. For drivers looking for an electric saloon with plenty of technology, it continues to be one of the most established choices available.

3. Audi Q4 e-tron

The Audi Q4 e-tron secured third place, with 14,433 registrations.

Combining Audi’s premium styling with electric technology, the Q4 e-tron appeals to drivers looking for a comfortable and practical electric SUV.

4. Audi Q6 e-tron

The newer Audi Q6 e-tron quickly made an impact, recording 13,148 registrations.

With modern technology, a premium interior and strong charging capabilities, the Q6 e-tron demonstrates the growing demand for larger electric SUVs.

5. Ford Explorer

The Ford Explorer was one of the strongest new entries in the EV market, with 12,237 registrations.

Designed with practicality in mind, the electric Explorer offers plenty of space and a familiar SUV design, making it an appealing option for families.

Electric Cars Are Continuing to Grow in Popularity

The growth of the EV market has continued into 2026. According to the latest SMMT data, 355,746 battery electric cars were registered between January and August 2026, representing a 28.6% increase compared with the same period in 2025. BEVs accounted for 25.62% of the new car market during that period.

August was particularly strong, with 28,063 new battery electric cars registered, giving EVs a 29.8% market share for the month.

More Choice Than Ever Before

One of the biggest changes in the electric vehicle market is the amount of choice now available.

Just a few years ago, drivers had a relatively limited selection of EVs. Today, there are electric hatchbacks, SUVs, saloons and family cars available across a wide range of price points.

Newer models such as the Renault 5, Kia EV3 and Škoda Elroq are also helping to make electric driving more accessible.

The Importance of Charging Infrastructure

As more electric cars arrive on UK roads, charging infrastructure will become increasingly important.

For many drivers, having access to reliable charging at home or work can make owning an EV significantly more convenient. Businesses also have an opportunity to support employees, customers and visitors by installing EV charging facilities.

At ECCUK we help businesses and organisations prepare for the growing demand for electric vehicle charging.

The Future of Electric Driving in the UK

The UK’s best-selling electric cars show that there is no longer a “typical” EV driver.

Some drivers want a spacious family SUV. Others want a compact city car, a premium vehicle or a practical everyday hatchback. The growing variety of electric vehicles means there are now more options than ever before.

With EV registrations continuing to rise and new models regularly entering the market, electric vehicles are set to become an increasingly familiar sight on UK roads.

The question is no longer whether electric cars are becoming mainstream – but which one will be right for you.
