OZEV approved EV chargers installation for schools and campuses

Public Schools can claim 75% towards the cost of supply and installation of £2,000 per EV Charging Socket installed. These grants are designed to support schools in adopting sustainable technologies, lowering upfront installation costs while future-proofing your site. How much grant funding can a school get for EV chargers?

State-funded schools, colleges and academies can claim through the Workplace Charging Scheme for state-funded education institutions. It covers 75% of the cost to buy and install chargepoints, capped at £2,000 per socket as of 1 April 2026. Vouchers issued before that date are still worth up to £2,500 per socket. You can claim up to 40 sockets across all your sites, and the scheme is funded until 31 March 2027.

Can a multi-academy trust claim for more than one school?

Yes. Academy trusts can apply for up to 40 sockets per institution within the trust, rather than 40 across the trust as a whole. For a trust running several sites this is the single most valuable detail in the scheme, and it is frequently missed.

What does a school actually pay after the grant?

The grant covers 75% of purchase and installation up to the per-socket cap, so the school funds the remainder plus anything above the cap. The final figure depends on how far the chargers sit from the incoming supply, whether the existing board has spare capacity, and groundworks. Will installation disrupt the school day?

Most installations of one to four charge points are completed in a single day. Work is normally scheduled for INSET days or school holidays, and multi-site trusts are usually phased site by site.

How do we stop pupils and the public using the staff chargers?

Charge points are access-controlled, typically by RFID card or app, so only authorised staff can start a session. Some schools deliberately open theirs to the community outside school hours as a revenue stream, with tariffs and time windows set separately from staff use.
