If you are responsible for a workplace car park, a depot, a fleet or a site your customers park at, you have probably worked out that installing EV charging is not the simple job it looks like from outside. The equipment is the easy part. What decides the cost, the timescale and whether the project works at all is your site: how much spare electrical capacity you have, how far the cable has to run, and what the grid operator says when you ask.

What does commercial EV charger installation cost?

There is no honest single price, and anyone quoting one before seeing your site is guessing. The equipment is a minority of the bill on most commercial projects. The cost is driven by four things:

  • Spare capacity at your incoming supply. If you have it, the job is straightforward. If you do not, you are into either a supply upgrade with your DNO or smart load management to share what you already have.
  • Distance and groundwork. Running cable across a car park costs more than running it along a wall. Digging costs more than trunking.
  • Charge point speed and count. A 7kW socket and a 150kW rapid unit are different projects, not different prices.
  • Whether it is one site or several. Multi site work is cheaper per unit and considerably easier to manage under one installer and one back office.

What grant funding is still available in 2026?

Most commercial projects qualify for something. These are the schemes that are open, and they are funded to 31 March 2027:

  • Workplace Charging Scheme, £500 per socket, on up to 40 sockets per applicant. For businesses, charities and public authorities.
  • Workplace Charging Scheme for state funded schools, £2,000 per socket, on up to 40 sockets.
  • Landlord residential, £500 per socket, on up to 200 sockets a year.
  • On street and residential, £500 per socket, for renters and flat owners.

Three schemes closed to new applications on 31 March 2026: the EV Infrastructure Grant for staff and fleets, the Commercial Landlord Chargepoint Grant and the Landlord Infrastructure Grant. If you are still being quoted the old, much larger headline figures elsewhere, those pages have not been updated. We would rather tell you what is real than quote a number that no longer exists.

How many charge points does your business need?

The common mistake is buying for today’s EV count. The second most common is buying for a future that never arrives. The number you want depends on three things, and none of them is how many electric cars your staff drive right now:

  • Dwell time. Staff parked for eight hours need slow, cheap sockets. Customers parked for forty minutes need fast ones. Getting this wrong is the single most expensive mistake on a commercial project.
  • Turnover per bay. One well placed rapid charger can serve more vehicles in a day than six slow ones, at a fraction of the civils cost.
  • Your capacity ceiling. There is usually a number above which the project stops being a wiring job and becomes a supply upgrade. Knowing where that line sits changes the plan.

How the installation runs, and how long it takes

A standard workplace installation is days on site, not weeks. Where your supply needs upgrading, or the scheme is a large one, two to three weeks is the realistic maximum for our part of it. A DNO’s own lead time sits on top of that and is set by them, not by us, which is the single best reason to survey early rather than late.

  • 1. Free site survey. An engineer looks at your supply, your parking layout and your cable routes, and tells you what the site will support. Confirmed within one working day of you asking. No obligation and no charge.
  • 2. Design and grant validation. We design the solution around what the survey found, then check and process your OZEV claim before anything is ordered.
  • 3. Installation. Carried out by our own engineers, to the timescales above.
  • 4. Maintenance and monitoring. Charge points that are not monitored quietly stop earning. Multi site clients run everything through one management system, with one installer to call.

How to choose a commercial EV charger installer

Six things worth checking before you appoint anyone, ourselves included. They are the questions that separate a project that lands on time from one that stalls halfway. Most commercial EV charger installers will answer yes to two or three of them. Rather fewer answer yes to all six.

  • Ask for their OZEV installer number. Every authorised installer is issued one, and you can cross-reference it against the government’s own list rather than taking a certificate on trust. This matters because the grant claim has to be made through an authorised installer, and only work carried out after their authorisation date qualifies. Any genuine installer will have the number to hand.
  • Do their own engineers do the work? Subcontracted labour is why dates slip and why nobody owns the snag list afterwards. Ours are our own. Where we need extra hands we bring in individual contractors who work under us, never another firm’s project manager.
  • Who handles the DNO application? If your supply needs upgrading, the grid operator’s timeline sets the programme, not the electrician’s. An installer who hands that back to you has handed you the hardest part of the job.
  • Do they process the grant claim, or leave it with you? The common failure is applying in the wrong order, or for the wrong scheme. We validate and process it as part of the job.
  • What happens when a charger faults? Charge points that are not monitored quietly stop earning. Ask who you call, how quickly they attend, and whether multi site estates run on one management system or several.
  • Do they also install at homes? An installer splitting their week between driveways and depots is learning your site on your money. ECC is commercial only — workplaces, fleets, depots, schools, councils and public sites.

How much does commercial EV charger installation cost in the UK?
