ECCUK were appointed to deliver a commercial EV charging installation at Newmarket Hospital, part of the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust. The project supports the Trust’s commitment to sustainability, carbon reduction, and the growing demand for electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across NHS healthcare sites.
With an increasing number of staff, visitors, and fleet users travelling to the hospital in electric vehicles, the Trust identified the need to expand EV charging provision to improve accessibility and future-proof the site.
Why EV Chargers Were Installed
Electric vehicle adoption continues to rise across the UK, and Newmarket Hospital has seen a significant increase in staff and visitors arriving in EVs. Existing charging capacity was no longer sufficient to meet demand during peak operating hours.
The installation of additional EV chargers allows the Trust to:
• Support staff transitioning to electric vehicles
• Provide reliable charging facilities for patients and visitors
• Reduce on-site carbon emissions
• Align with NHS sustainability and net-zero targets
• Create scalable infrastructure for future EV growth
This project forms part of a wider EV rollout strategy across both Newmarket Hospital and West Suffolk Hospital, ensuring consistency across Trust sites.
Scope of Works
ECCUK completed the installation of eighteen 22kw EV charging sockets, delivering a durable, smart, and user-friendly charging solution. Newmarket Hospital is a busy, operational healthcare environment.
ECCUK carefully planned all works to ensure:
• Installation of 9 dual-rated EV chargers
• Routing of power through existing underground ducting, minimising excavation and disruption
• Construction of concrete plinths to securely mount each EV charger
• Installation of barrier protection to protect chargers from vehicle impact
• Integration with the Fuuse pay-to-charge EV charging platform
• Full health & safety compliance on a live hospital site
• Working on a Live Hospital Site
• Safe access for staff, patients, and emergency vehicles
• Clearly defined working zones and traffic management
• Minimal disruption to hospital operations
• Clean, efficient, and professional installation practices
By utilising existing duct routes and careful scheduling, the project was delivered efficiently while maintaining the highest safety standards.
Smart Connectivity & Remote Management
All the Ratio EV chargers installed at Newmarket Hospital are fitted with integrated 5G SIM connectivity, ensuring reliable communication with the Fuuse and Ratio charging platforms. This allows for real-time monitoring, remote diagnostics, and software updates, significantly reducing downtime and the need for on-site maintenance visits.
This smart functionality is particularly important in a hospital environment, where charger availability is essential for staff and visitors.
Fuuse Pay-to-Charge Platform
The EV chargers were integrated with the Fuuse EV charging management platform, providing a flexible and scalable pay-to-charge solution suitable for NHS and public sector environments.
The Fuuse back office is managed by the client and enables them to:
• Allow charging via mobile app or RFID card
• Oversee secure payment processing
• Have full visibility of charger usage and performance
• Manage tariffs and revenue
• Centralise management across multiple sites
The platform allows the Trust to efficiently manage EV charging while ensuring fair access and supporting future expansion across additional hospital locations.
Project Management & Collaboration
The EV rollout at Newmarket Hospital was overseen by Jake Bignall, Facilities Manager at West Suffolk NHS Trust, who is leading the EV charging programme across both Newmarket Hospital and West Suffolk Hospital.
ECCUK worked closely with the facilities and estates teams to ensure the installation aligned with operational requirements and long-term sustainability goals.
Jake Bignall, Facilities Manager – West Suffolk NHS Trust, commented:
“We have worked with ECCUK previously and would be happy to recommend them to any business or public body looking to install EV chargers. The team were efficient, clean and quick.”
